RECREATION • LANDMARKLocated along the north end of False Creek, the BC Place stadium is the prime spot to catch professional sports in the city of Vancouver. First opened in 1983, the stadium originally had the world's largest air-supported roof. That roof was replaced as part of renovations that began in 2010. The stadium now boasts a retractable roof and the world's second-largest HD video screen. Currently, BC Place is home to the BC Lions of the CFL, the Whitecaps FC of the MLS, and was the home of the 2010 Olympic Games. The stadium cost $307 million to build and can hold more than 54,000 for a soccer game. Pope John Paul II hosted a sold-out "Celebration of Life" there in 1984, as part of his visit to Canada.
